Meth Addiction Dangers

Meth Addiction can be Deadly
Crystal meth, more popularly known as methamphetamine or meth for short, is a highly addictive drug that has adversely affected many lives. The use of crystal meth leads to harmful effects by drastically increasing the amounts of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the human brain. Experts would agree that crystal meth addiction is one of the toughest forms of addictions today. Its ability to activate the psychological reward system leads to heightened sexual pleasure, improved self-esteem and euphoria, all contributing to making it one of the most dangerous drugs on the streets today.
Crystal meth is often used by females because it produces rapid weight loss. However, the weight loss from crystal meth use is only fleeting, as it stops six weeks after the drug intake. Eventually, when the person stops taking the drug, the weight returns, often to a higher level due to a change in metabolism from the drug use. Crystal meth addiction adversely affects neurotransmitters in the brain resulting in a false sense of euphoria. It also serves as a stimulant to increase energy, concentration and alertness reducing fatigue and appetite. For people who are feeling depressed, methamphetamine is a quick and easy resort. It is responsible for enhancing one’s libido and sexual pleasure.
Long-term use of crystal meth leads to brain damage and a sensation of flesh crawling. Hallucinations and paranoia are also be some of its long-term effects. What’s worse, meth addiction can cause death due to cardiac arrest, stroke or hyperthermia. Kidney damage or failure may also result from from muscle breakdown or rhabdomyolysis.

Crystal meth is illegally manufactured as a street drug made in labs where over-the-counter drugs are being chemically altered. Other street names for methamphetamine or crystal meth include Chicken Feed, Biker’s Coffee, Poor Man’s Cocaine, Ice and Batu.
A condition coined as “Meth Mouth” is used to refer to that state wherein crystal meth users and addicts tend to lose their teeth quickly and abnormally. It is characterized by an advanced tooth decay due to heavy methamphetamine use. It coincides with bruxism, or teeth clenching and grinding where the tooth enamel produces wear and cracks; open mouth when sleeping; and hyposalivation or dry mouth.
Additionally, while under the influence of methamphetamine, users show extreme sexual behavior due to increased sexual pleasure and libido. The drug may also cause an ability to consume extended durations of time for sex and an inability to achieve orgasm. Having all these effects, the use of the drug may, then, lead to irresponsible sex which can spread sexually infectious diseases. The drug is also said to cause erectile dysfunction brought about by vasoconstriction, or a constriction of the blood vessels.
