Sadness is a universal emotion that everyone goes through every now and then. It’s a feeling that can be evoked by a movie, a book, a personal argument or fight, a disappointment, financial or work-related problems. We all feel sad for various reasons. But if the sadness lingers for an alarming length of time or if it is already leading us to think of ways of hurting ourselves, then what we’re going through is no ordinary case of the blues. We may already be sinking into the serious illness of depression.

If a person’s sadness comes with feelings of emptiness and despair, he may be showing symptoms of depression that needs professional attention. Depression is a condition that alters a person’s life by hindering his ability to work, interact with other people, eat and sleep normally. It interferes with a person’s emotions and often makes him feel hopeless, worthless and completely empty.

But how do you know if you or people close to you are suffering from depression? While the symptoms of depression may vary from person to person, there are common signs that will help distinguish this condition. These symptoms may include feelings of hopelessness, sleep problems, either loss of appetite or overeating, inability to concentrate on tasks that used to be easily understood, irritability and restlessness. Others may also experience unexplained headaches, back or stomach pains, other muscle aches, and the lingering feeling of exhaustion that makes even the smallest tasks too physically draining.

If the symptoms have become overwhelming and especially if the person is having thoughts of worthlessness and begins to feel that there’s no use for him live any longer, he definitely needs professional help. There are qualified depression treatment centers that provide rehab programs that can be customized to cater to patients’ individual needs because each person suffering from depression may require a different approach. It is important to examine the treatment programs the center offers to find the right one that will suit you or a loved one suffering from depression.

Depression needs to be treated as early as possible. Once the early symptoms start to show, it helps to seek professional depression help to prevent the condition from worsening. Suicide is a major risk factor that needs to be prevented. A person who is suffering from depression will most likely reach that point when he completely loses the will to live and thinks of suicide as the only escape from his tormenting feelings of utter worthlessness.

If a person starts expressing hopelessness or feelings of being trapped, has an unusual preoccupation with the idea of death, talks about killing himself, bids goodbye to people close to him, gets things in order by giving away prized possessions and entrusting personal matters to other people, he is showing the serious warning signs of suicide.

In some cases, the person may show sudden mood swings such as being extremely sad one moment and being too happy the next. He may act recklessly as if fulfilling a death wish, or he may keep talking about his desire to escape. Aside from being warning signs of a person’s suicidal tendency, they may also be his way of crying out for help. Getting clinical help from a professional depression treatment center as soon as possible may be the best, if not the only, way to save his life.
