If you or a loved one are looking for drug addiction rehab, we can help. The article below outlines the process of addiction.

Addiction comes in many forms and shapes: addiction to drugs, alcohol, love, sex, crisis, food and endless others. Debates are ongoing about whether addictions are inherited or arise from an environmental source. How and why people become addicted is an ongoing debate, but suffices to say it is real and can cause pain, distress, and destruction of lives.

Everyone wants to feel good about themselves and their environment. Those prone to addiction turn to people, places and things outside themselves to feel better about their feelings and their lives. Addictive personalities want or need to feel different, to change their feelings quickly. Alteration of mood is the primary force behind addiction, whether the mood change is considered good or bad by society’s standards. People can be addicted to anger, physical pain, stress, adrenaline, self-pity, depression, or any number of feelings that take someone outside themselves. Addictions to “bad” relationships are common, as is the need for drama and trauma. The need for drama or crisis keeps feelings alive and excitement at a premium. For those addicted to trauma or drama, calm relationships are neither interesting nor possible.

From a physiological perspective, the brain produces chemicals when stimulated. The portion of the brain producing chemicals when stimulated cannot differentiate between “good” and “bad” stimuli, or what we consider negative or positive. Reliance on outside sources for stimuli will re-wire our brain to become accustomed to such stimuli, eventually developing a dependence on it for developing a feeling. Addiction to the feeling develops without the person being aware of such reliance. Once reliance develops, the ability to “walk away” from the stimuli is difficult, if not impossible. Outside help, treatment or therapy is needed to help recognize the addiction, to separate from it, and most importantly, to look to the individual cause of the addiction.

Addicts are unable to treat themselves because they created their own world, their own reality. Until an addict can see their addiction as being potentially detrimental they will be unable or unwilling to address it. Often the detrimental effect of the addiction is not seen until some ultimate painful event occurs, such event being referred to as “bottoming out”. Sometimes bottoming out offers the addict the first glimpse of the addiction and at that time, the person may be willing to address it. At that time, there will arise a need to reach out to someone or something outside themselves to help see, understand, address and alleviate the addiction.

People use numerous substances or situations as addictions, the more notable ones being drugs, alcohol, sex, food, gambling, over-working, excessive exercising and relationships. Each one carries its own particular dangers and downfalls, with drugs and alcohol often being the most obviously dangerous addictions due to the physical, emotional and spiritual damage they cause. Others may affect money, physical well being or money and security. Each one needs to be addressed separately and distinctly in order to assess the root, the origin of the malady. Professional help is recommended and is readily available.
