Drug Alcohol Rehab
Drug and alcohol addictions touch countless lives throughout the Hawaiian Islands, The United States and the world. Addictions cut across age, economic and status boundaries, affecting every aspect and age of life, from 12 year olds to the elderly, from laborers to educators, lawyers, doctors and housewives. No one is immune to or free from addiction.
Addictions are both psychological and physical. Addiction can be a physical need developed from drug and alcohol usage, or a psychological need due to prolonged usage. In either case, the addict will need help understanding, treating and living with addiction. Hawaii Island Recovery understands addictions and will help the addict to learn about themselves, their addiction and how to build a new life free of the bondage of addiction.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) collects scientific data aimed at educating the public about the true nature of addiction and to alleviate old misconceptions about the origins of addiction. Addicts are not of weak moral character, but are genetically predisposed to be addicted to some substance should use of the substance begin. NIDA believes that scientific data is the best source of information available to begin educating the public about addiction.
Numerous forms of treatment and rehabilitation facilities exist which offer a variety of options for addressing addictions. Faith–based programs, teen programs, residential programs, outpatient programs and detoxification centers all offer various forms of treatment and therapies to address addictions. 12 step programs are one of the most popular and trusted methods for addressing addictions. 12 step meetings originated in the early 1900’s and have become a popular, successful means of addressing addictions. Alcoholics Anonymous was the first of these programs and has provided the structure for 12 step groups ranging from narcotics, cocaine, eating, sex, gambling and shopping. Many treatment facilities incorporate 12 step programs into their program as an option for achieving and maintaining sobriety.
12 step programs utilize the following steps as a process for recovery:
1. Admit that we are powerless over drugs or alcohol.
2. Came to believe that a higher power could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of a higher power.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to a higher power, to ourselves and to another person the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Became willing to have a higher power remove our shortcomings.
7. Asked our higher power to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made amends to people except to do so would harm them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with our higher power asking only for knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry it out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps we carried this message to other alcoholics and addicts and sought to practice these principles in all out affairs.
The decision to seek help in recovery is often difficult and filled with fear and doubt. The extent of the addiction is rarely seen until a period of abstinence is obtained, but due to doubt and fear, the process can be difficult.
