It Requires more than Abstinence – In the News
BBC News Magazine in Karachi, Pakistan has recently released an article about it. According to the article, the former Pakistani capital is having a serious problem with heroin dependency. Little attention and government support is being given to help addiction victims. One nonprofit organization offers an attempt to help, albeit through the cold turkey method. Many of Karachi’s patients are left with the lone choice of complete withdrawal as the only viable solution. This means they had to be confined in a treatment facility to painfully weather withdrawal symptoms while attempting to detoxify themselves naturally and transition to a drug-free state without any medication. Some pain relievers may occasionally be given if funding permits.
The treatments have been generally unsuccessful. Staff at the free treatment facility observe relapse with most clients. Those who have left the facility report minor success. Some patients have returned to the treatment facility over ten times.
There are many treatments to battle this obsession. The most common form of detoxification is through Methadone, Suboxone and or behavioral modification therapy. The benefits of Methadone and Suboxone are somewhat indispensable.
- Detoxification is not considered a single treatment but it is an important part in the recovery process. It stops further drug use which allows the body to expel the unwanted chemicals. This means that the client may experience withdrawal symptoms. If an addict chooses to detox cold turkey instead of using Methadone or Suboxone the detox will be uncomfortable and painful.
- Methadone and Suboxone treatment can safely and effectively get rid of the addiction to opioids. They are synthetic opioid that are used to reduce cravings and reduce withdrawal symptoms.
- Behavioral therapy is another effective alternative when treating this kind of dependency. Behavioral therapy, such as cognitive behavior therapy provide additional support in the recovery process. The most important aspect of this component of recovery is to find a competent therapist that is experienced with addition.
It is worth noting that a combination of the treatment options yield better results. It can be said that there is no single treatment method that can appropriately and adequately provide the right treatment.
It is important to emphasize that the full willingness and cooperation of the person being treated are fundamental requirements. Successful heroin addiction recovery is not possible without them.
These addicts need treatment, they cannot do it on their own. It is virtually impossible to recover from this addiction with sheer willpower. The addict has the choice to use suboxone and methadone to assist him/her in withdrawal. However, it is clear to those who have quit cold turkey that using these treatment methods make detoxification easier on the addict.
