Drug recover centers are located throughout the United States. SAMSHA, the United States Government’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, is part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Agency (SAMHSA) collects and publishes data concerning substance abuse treatment and has listed on its site more that 11,000 registered treatment programs throughout the United States. SAMSHA has collected data and formulated information regarding the type of treatment, the effectiveness of treatment and the information an addict or alcoholic’s family may need to discuss treatment with the suffering user. When looking for a residential treatment facility for yourself or a loved one, ask questions of the facility. Here are some suggested questions to ask or areas to discuss with the drug recovery center:

1. Does the program accept insurance, and if not, will they agree to structure payments?
2. Is the program registered, licensed and operated by professionals?
3. Is the facility where the program is located clean, well operated and safe? Are pictures available?
4. Does the program address all the needs of the individual, such as; psychological; physical; vocational; infectious disease; legal, etc?
5. Does the program address physical disabilities and sexual orientation as well as address age and culturally appropriate treatment issues?
6. Does the program offer and encourage long-term care and follow-up services in order to improve the likelihood of success?
7. Does the program re-evaluate and re-assess the treatment plan as the person proceeds through recovery?
8. Does the program incorporate individual, group counseling and behavioral therapies as part of its overall approach to recovery?
9. Does the program utilize medication, if deemed necessary by a physician, as part of its recovery plan?
10. Does the program have a relapse prevention program which includes ongoing monitoring as part of its long-term plan?

Asking these questions of a treatment program will not only provide you with information you need to make an informed decision about treatment, but will also bring you peace of mind knowing that you can trust the program. When you talk to the program be sure to ask them what they do on a daily basis. Ask for a daily schedule to see what types of activities are planned and encouraged. Hawaii Island Recovery will provide you with a complete daily and weekly schedule which includes counseling, treatment and other activities aimed at providing a balanced physical, emotional and spiritual recovery. A balanced program should include not only therapy but an opportunity for recreational activities of a type that the person can enjoy, benefit and grow from.

Follow-up care is a critical part of recovery. Recovery begins in a treatment center but the real challenge begins when the person walks out the door, on their own, and faces the world outside. Hawaii Island Recovery offers a unique Transitional Program designed for the individual to assist them in transitioning to their new life in recovery. Programs can run from three months to one year, or longer if desired, and offers assistance in establishing sober contacts, sober living, recreational activities, spiritual activities and any other needs necessary for ongoing sobriety. Additionally, ongoing counseling with familiar case workers or professionals is encouraged as part of recovery.
