F.A.Q.
Who is Hawaii Island Recovery (HIR)?
Hawaii Island Recovery is an upscale private drug and alcohol therapeutic living center. Our professional staff cares deeply about the clients with whom we work. Our programs are based on the most effective proven healing methods, utilizing a community healing approach that takes full advantage of the beauty, majesty and peace of Hawaii. We have chosen Hawaii so that our clients can be completely secluded from the rest of the world, free to focus on making themselves bet
What makes us different?
We are 3,000 miles from anywhere where the stress of daily life cannot reach you. We offer premium medical support, attention and treatment. We've moved away from the traditional institutionalized center in favor of an island that promotes natural recovery. We also offer premium amenities, including a world-class gym and a wide assortment of natural healing solutions including massage therapy, acupuncture and reiki. Besides the effective techniques we use to treat our clients, we also offer a highly advanced aftercare and transition program for when our clients leave the center.
Do you accept insurance?

HIR does not accept insurance; however we provide a professional billing service to help with your acceptance into the program, insurance remittance and working with you on any appeals.

How long should I stay?

Our programs range from 30, 60, 90 to even 120 days. Our average client stays for 60 – 90 days. The program was designed for 90 days.

Why is a 90 day stay recommended?

Within the first 30 days, our clients spend most of their time detoxing and healing. This doesn't leave much time to take an active part in our program or in their own recovery. By 60 days, our clients are able to work on themselves and their recovery. After 90 days our clients are able to effectively apply what they have learned from the community-based therapy and apply it to their day-to-day lives.

What happens when I leave the center?

HIR recommends that clients take advantage of our aftercare program. A critical part of the program involves a team member assisting the client home and re-introducing them into their community. It can be difficult for a recently rehabilitated person to face all of their previous challenges alone, without assistance. Additional charges apply.

What is a transition program?
The transitional program is optional and requires an additional cost. The program starts when treatment ends and the recovery outside our center begins. Our staff will escort the client home, making all necessary arrangements necessary to ensure a successful recovery. The staff is available to stay anywhere from a week to a month, and are available thereafter for help. We also offer life-coaching services. The goal is to celebrate our client's 1-year anniversary and to hear their success stories and to see the difference we have made in their lives.
What happens after the initial contact?

The client will receive a phone call or email. The email will include our contact information and a contact person. We'll address any questions and concerns while constructing an intake profile. The next step is to fill-out the pre-admission form and arrange the payment details. The travel arrangements will need to be organized once payment is arranged. When a client arrives at the airport, we will have staff waiting to welcome them and begin the recovery process.

What happens on the first day at Hawaii Island Recovery?
After we pick a client up from the airport, they will be brought to our center or to a doctor for an assessment.

Upon arrival at the center, they will be introduced to the team who run the center. After that, we will conclude some paperwork that needs to be completed and then the client will meet the other clients in the center. Our goal in the first day is to make our client feel comfortable and confident with their decision to get the help they need.

How do I know if I have an addiction problem?
Here is a common definition of addiction:
In medicine, an addiction is a chronic neurobiological disorder that has genetic, psychosocial, and environmental dimensions and is characterized by one of the following: the continued use of a substance despite its detrimental effects, impaired control over the use of a drug (compulsive behavior), and preoccupation with a drug's use for non-therapeutic purposes (i.e. craving the drug). Addiction may be accompanied by the presence of deviant behaviors (for instance stealing money and forging prescriptions) that are used to obtain a drug.
If you or someone you know continually uses a substance such as a drug or alcohol, despite the harmful effects it may be causing, this is a good indication that there is an addiction. A greater indication is if the user of the substance is unable to stop using the substance, possibly even going to extreme measures in order to get what they feel like they need. In fact, if the substance is “needed”, that is a good indication of an addiction.
How long does it take to detox?
