Our chef cooks from the heart. His food by any standards is delectable, but it is the love he invests in each and every meal that most of our clients taste. Working in consort with a Naturopathic Physician, our chef prepares meals to the highest standard of nutritional quality, opting for locally grown fruit, vegetables and fish whenever possible. There is diversity in the menu planning to accommodate all tastes and if you have specific dietary requirements, our chef will work with you to ensure your nutritional needs are met.

Hawaii Island Recovery Addiction Program Services
1. Psychological Assessment and Treatment
Upon admittance into Hawaii Island Recovery’s Residential Program, you will be seen by our Clinical Director, a licensed Psychologist to assess mental health issues that may be co-occurring with your addiction. The clinical impressions of our Psychologist will be shared with the clinical staff and a course of treatment will be designed with your specific issues in mind. Our clinical staff is comprised of an MD, a PhD and three Master’s level counselors, all of whom you will be seeing during your treatment. While our therapists may utilize different techniques, we are committed to providing you with the best evidence-based methods of client-centered therapy available.
2. Psychiatric Assessment and Treatment
Incoming clients will see our Addictionologist / Psychiatrist on the day of admittance into our Residential program. A thorough evaluation is conducted to ascertain information about your addiction and a treatment protocol is prescribed. If detox medications are indicated, you will work closely with the doctor to ensure you are comfortable during this phase of your recovery. You will also be assessed for psychiatric issues that may be contributory to your addiction. Clients who are prescribed medication will meet with the Addictionologist/ Psychiatrist weekly, or more often if needed. Our physician is licensed to provide Suboxone in the state of Hawaii and also has admitting privileges at an area hospital if inpatient detox is required.
3. Medically Managed Outpatient Detox
While most of our incoming clients are medically stable and do not require hospitalization while detoxing from drugs or alcohol, close supervision is required to ensure the detox process is both safe and comfortable. The detox protocol will depend on several variables- the drugs that have been taken, the quantities consumed and the longevity of the addiction. Medication may be indicated to support a safe withdrawal. During this delicate phase of recovery, clients are closely monitored by our Addictionologist/ Psychiatrist- a licensed medical doctor, as well as our trained staff. Clients who are actively detoxing do not participate in regularly schedule programing until they are deemed medically fit to do so.
4. Residential Program
Hawaii Island Recovery’s Residential Treatment Program provides intensive treatment for addictions of all kinds. Residential treatment refers to a level of care that is more restrictive than outpatient care, and is by design, intended to eliminate access to all substances or material that may be abused. Clients in the residential program are monitored 24 hours a day and are under the supervision of staff members at all times. Residential treatment provides a secure, structured and supervised environment for individuals during their most vulnerable stage of recovery.
5. Intensive Outpatient Treatment
Intensive Outpatient Treatment refers to a level of care in which a client does not reside in a structured residential setting, but rather receives intensive services most often in an office setting. Hawaii Island Recovery offers Intensive Outpatient Services to clients who reside in our Sober Living House, and on a case by case basis, to individuals who reside in the local community. Most often, Intensive Outpatient Treatment is a component of our Transition Program, an option for HIR clients who complete the residential portion of their treatment program and require ongoing support to maintain their sobriety as they return to “normal” life. Many of HIR’s therapeutic services can be provided on an out-patient basis.
6. Individual and Family Psychotherapy
The bedrock of our treatment program is psychotherapy- a process by which our clients peel back the onion and examine the root cause of their behavior. Psychotherapy is a dynamic exchange between therapist and client intended to illicit insight and understanding and to serve as a spring board for healing and positive change. Psychotherapy can occur individually, in groups or with families. Family sessions can be particularly helpful as clients prepare to transition out of the residential program and return home. All of these services are available to Hawaii Island Recovery clients.
7. Case Management
Our clients at Hawaii Island Recovery work closely with a case manager who ensures all their treatment needs are being met. The case manager develops an individual treatment plan with each client, monitors progress and assists with discharge planning. The case manager is always available to our clients and is a liaison for family, friends or collateral agencies as needed.
8. Transitional Care
Hawaii Island Recovery offers our clients a Transition Program to assist them with the adjustment from residential treatment to “normal” life. Because this is a vulnerable period to individuals new in recovery, we offer Transitional Care to ensure our clients continue to receive supportive services on an outpatient basis. Depending on the needs of the individual, clients may reside in HIR’s Sober Living House while receiving outpatient group, individual, and experiential therapies.
9. Dual Diagnosis Therapy
Addiction rarely happens in a vacuum. Most often, there are co-occurring psychological issues that contribute to the maladaptive addictive behavior. This is referred to as Dual Diagnosis. It is essential when treating an individual for addiction to assess whether they also meet the diagnostic criteria for a psychological disorder. Depression, anxiety, PTSD and bi-polar depression are common co-occurring disorders for people who abuse drugs and alcohol. Left untreated, these underlying issues increase the risk for relapse significantly. Hawaii Island Recovery provides comprehensive psychological and psychiatric treatment to ensure our clients receive the care they need to thrive in their sobriety.
10. Intervention
Intervention services are often requested to assist families who are attempting to persuade a reluctant loved one to enter substance abuse treatment. Hawaii Island Recovery will dispatch a highly qualified, compassionate Intervention Specialist to support the family in this challenging endeavor.
11. Sober Living
Sober living is a life style that requires practice. For most addicts, their addiction was a behavioral pattern established over many years. Similarly, breaking these patterns can take repetition and time. Hawaii Island Recovery highly recommends that our clients enter into our Sober Living Program as a part of their transition from residential treatment to the “real” world. While this is a minimally restrictive environment, the program demands accountability and provides structure and support to those in early recovery. This enables clients to practice sobriety and hone their tools, while continuing to receive supportive therapeutic services from our clinicians.
12. Sober Escorts
Sober Escorts provide outreach to persons in need of sober support at times of vulnerability in their recovery. It is not uncommon for a newcomer (one new to sobriety) to avoid situations that may serve as a trigger for old patterns of behavior. At times, these events can not be avoided, and this may be an occasion to seek out the support of a Sober Escort.
