Addiction is an affliction of the body, mind and spirit. To successfully treat addiction, Hawaii Island Recovery employs a multi-disciplinary, integrative treatment approach that ensures our clients receive the most effective evidence-based interventions combined with experiential and holistic therapies to support a full recovery. Hawaii Island Recovery applies the most effective tools and interventions to treat addiction to opiates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, prescription medication, marijuana, street drugs, and alcohol. Under the care of our Board- Certified Addictionologist, our clients are safely and comfortably detoxed. When clinically appropriate, medication including suboxone, may be used on a short-term basis to ease the detoxification process and enable clients to participate in all aspects of our treatment program.
Common behavioral addictions for which people seek help include gambling, food, sex and pornography. These may be as destructive as a substance abuse problem, and require intervention that not only addresses the problematic addictive behavior, but also identifies the underlying emotional and psychological issues that drive the behavior. This is true of all addictions. Using techniques derived from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Behavior Modification, EMDR and Health Realization models, our skilled therapists will guide you into a deeper understanding of your addiction, facilitate the resolution of past traumas and provide you with the tools you need to realize your goal of living addiction free.
Hawaii Island Recovery enhances its individual and group therapy sessions with diverse therapeutic techniques. Based on each client’s individualized care plan, these highly effective clinical therapies may include:
Dr. John Hibscher, Clinical Director, oversees all therapy provided by HIR's highly trained Master level therapists.
All clients are fully evaluated by a medical professional within 24 hours of entering Hawaii Island Recovery’s residential treatment program. To provide clients the very best medical care, a physician addictionologist or a licensed physician assistant, conduct the evaluations.
The addictionologist establishes and supervises each client’s detox from alcohol, meth, heroin and other substances. Dr. Stephen Denzer supervises our registered nurse in the detox protocol. Throughout this phase of treatment, our physician closely monitors the client’s detox-related medical needs so that withdrawal or chronic pain issues can be immediately addressed.
If a client has a pre-existing condition or other non-detox related health need, Hawaii Island Recovery will facilitate access to a local full-service health center or dentist where he or she may use personal insurance or funds to pay for services.

Learning new strategies for healthful living is key to a client’s successful recovery from addiction. Hawaii Island Recovery’s comprehensive program incorporates learning new skills, or rediscovering previous practices, of taking responsibility and care of yourself through good nutrition, fitness and enjoyable recreational activities.
Fitness and NutritionTo help clients improve their overall physical strength and level of fitness, individuals receive on-going personal training from a licensed trainer throughout their residential program. Sessions are held at a fully equipped gym where clients may develop a fitness routine that is physically challenging and also fun. Our personalized fitness training and yoga therapy focus on building strength, stamina and flexibility, while improving coordination and motor skills. Hawaii Island Recovery’s chef works with clients to understand and satisfy their nutritional needs. While preparing delicious and healthy cuisine for clients, our chef also actively teaches how to prepare simple and nutritious meals. Clients practice this important life skill by planning and preparing meals on weekends with the supervision of staff.
Recreational ActivitiesA healthy lifestyle incorporates activities that are rejuvenating and fun. The goal of Hawaii Island Recovery’s recreational activities is to give clients opportunities to practice appropriate social interactions and improve their physical condition. The activities also foster positive interests that support long-term sobriety. Recreational activities are matched to the client’s abilities and frequently include an educational component. Against the backdrop of Hawaii Island’s sheer outdoor beauty, activities include swimming, snorkeling, hiking, fishing and surfing. Outings to Volcano National Park and the historic City of Refuge are popular and enable clients to learn about Hawaii’s culture and the Big Island’s reputation as one of the world’s most healing environments.
At Hawaii Island Recovery, the details of each client’s treatment are carefully managed to ensure optimal benefit from the program and long-term success.
